1973 ~ 2011
We lost Jeff Bates on Saturday, August 27, 2011 after a four-year battle with melanoma. He passed away at age 38 in the comfort of his own home, surrounded by family and friends.
Jeff was born in Salt Lake City, Utah to Teresa and Gary Bates on July 21, 1973. Jeff was a kind and loving father, husband, brother, and friend. A natural athlete, it was thrilling to watch him maneuver a bike, skateboard, snowboard, or anything else he could get his hands on, always with incredible grace. He worked for decades in the outdoor industry and spent many years as a bicycle mechanic at both the Wild Rose and at Backcountry.com. For Jeff, life was all about the experiences, stories, and friends that we gather over the years. He was always up for a barbecue, desert camping trip, epic bike ride in the Wasatch, backcountry split-board tour, or a fishing trip on the Green. An accomplished mountain bike racer, he won the 2001 Intermountain Cup mountain bike race series and raced frequently at 24 Hours of Moab for Pereira Cycles. Jeff never said an unkind word about anyone and was loved by all.
