“Now I can get up. I can get off that floor! It’s amazing!” It’s the little things that Lynne Lampila struggled doing after she had a double hip replacement. “Balance was of course at the top. I wanted to be able to get in and out of my car easier. We have a boat, and I wanted to be able to get in and out of the boat. Getting off the floor, yes, because I had fallen in the past,” said Lynne.
During her physical therapy, health experts used Pilates principles to help her regain mobility. “It’s something that’s becoming a little bit more popular, Pilates rehab. What we do is we’re taking Pilates principles and incorporating them into the principles that we already use for physical therapy,” explained Diana Rippl, a rehabilitations services manager with Lee Health.
One of the basic principles is breathing. Physical therapists are teaching patients how to use their breath to get more movement. “Your diaphragm is a core muscle, so using the diaphragm to pull the ribs down and elongate the spine to allow a little bit more movement,” said Rippl.
The breathing techniques in conjunction with Pilates exercises help patients build core strength, improve balance, and develop alignment through their shoulders, spine, and hips. “It does make a difference. And also, there’s a portion of focusing on your breath that really gives a connection from your mind to your body,” said Rippl.
Lynn completed her physical therapy, but she continues practicing the Pilates principles. “It’s very soothing. It doesn’t hurt when you’re doing it. Afterward, you’re not sore like you would be if you went to a gym. Little by little, the results creep up on you,” she said.
Results that have helped Lynne regain her independence. Pilates therapy focuses on the entire body to improve strength and mobility.
