April 2nd, 2005. Summit of Villarrica volcano, southern Andes of Chile. Strong degassing was heard 18 km away. As discovered by scientist of the New Mexico Technological University in 2010, Helmholtz resonance is responsible for the intense sounds (infrasound and audible) as gas mass is forced to oscillate vertically through a narrow constriction.
