The first thing you'll notice when you enter the exhibition is the theatrical appearance of David's work. He has a large private collection of magazine, book clippings and film stills of performers. He transfers and layers the still pictures on to media like fabric, wood and film. His work attempts to explore how theatrical staging shifts our perception of the world.
Some of the most stunning work is done on large format canvasses. The actors and performers take up huge swaths of the pieces in a monochromatic palette. The work is moving, yet mysterious. You constantly ask yourself, Who are these actors? When is this work from? And that, is the point of David Noonans work. To separate performer from performance.
David is supported by the Australian Government through the Australian Council for the Arts.
The show is open until December 20th at the St. Louis Contemporary art museum.
