M#1 Quatuor MP4/Pierre Slinckx
The Quatuor MP4 is dedicated to the outstanding performance of masterworks from the 20th and 21st centuries, presents fresh work by living composers alongside the classics of the contemporary, with special acknowledgement of belgian composers. Quatuor MP4’s dedication to new music extends across genres, and has earned them a reputation among classical, contemporary and dance performances.
M#1 for electronics and string quartet is an attempt to fully integrate electronics into the realm of chamber music, that is, a music that requires the presence and the mutual listening of all the musicians (electronic performer included). Together with Quatuor MP4, the Belgian composer Pierre Slinckx plays a custom instrument built with two cheap midi-controllers and a laptop. No rocket science here, just pure craftsmanship. This instrument was designed before, during and after the writing process. Before : to experimentally find the best playability, to get familiar with its potential by improvising with it and to develop a notational system. During : to organically adapt the technical design of the instrument to the musical architecture of the piece. After : to perfect the sound fusion with the quartet.
