The title of the project is a free reference to the concept of “mimetic desire” theorized by the french anthropologist René Girard, who argued that human imitation is at the basis of many phenomena that characterize our behavior. The project wants to focus on the perception of some elements related to contemporary dance starting from the concept of imitation, as a basic element for cultural transmission and to embody dance movements, verifying how certain information and quality are replicated or transferred from one person to another through a memetic process.
The research process is based on simple principles such as copying, transforming and recomposing, observing the moving images on the screen made like a mash up of various examples of choreographies of the last century, from the ballets of Nizhinsky, through Merce Cunningham, Yvonne Rainer or today’s street dance. The occasionally complicated movements were transformed into a new dance, in which mistakes became a factor for innovation that turned the imitation process into the creation of something totally new.
The project had a first phase of research and development in 2017 through the Foundation Palazzo Strozzi in Florence in collaboration with the Lycée Victor Hugo, with the aim of involving a group of about thirty children of the kindergarten, between 4 and 5 years. (video: https:// vimeo.com/212551292) In 2018, a second step was part of Workspace Ricerca X by Carlotta Scioldo and Erika Di Crescenzo, in which the project has relate to a group of teenagers and a group of professional dancers (vimeo.com/257873618) This year was also hosted as a special project by Muoviti, Muoviti! by Susanne Franco in Palazzo Grassi Punta della Dogana Venice, with a group of children from 7 to 10 years (vimeo.com/261295268)
