The next episode across the high Alps!
The idea is based on a list of Austria's 10 highest summits like a mountaineers to-do-list but instead of hiking up with high alpine equipments I want to conquer these summits with my high performance hang glider.
Großglockner (1), Wildspitze (2) and now Weißkugel as 3rd highest peak are kinda super mountains covered in ice close to 4.000 m at the main Alpen ridge. Normally you avoid these obstacles when flying cross country, here the motto is: not far & fast but high & exposed!
At my 1st approach to peak Weißkugel coming from west I tried to soar its west facing ridge to reach higher altitudes but NW winds were not strong enough. Most of these high summits dont bless you with a thermal close by due to an ice covered mountain massif around it, so you need to outsmart them by coming thru the back door.
I then headed to the south facing cliff rock of 'Weißseespitze' further north trying to make altitude there (3.900 msl) to start my 2nd approach 5 km out with tailwind. Plan B finally worked out and beside another peak in the pocket (number 9 out of 10), I also got rewarded with an insane 50 km final glide!
The whole flight took 5 hrs 24 mins as 115 km triangle launched from mount Venet, Tirol, Austria.
All footages captured by 4 gopros, music by Kruder & Dorfmeister 'David Holmes Gone', glider Laminar 14.1, harness Skyline, flight planning by SeeYou, Naviter.
Enjoy & good flying!
