Breakfast baps and tea were on the menu for players of the 29 teams arriving at Ratoath GAA club to participate in the All Ireland Intermediate Sevens competition last Sunday. Club officials and volunteers had been up since 7am to undertake the massive task of lining and preparing the 8 pitches for the competition and as the games begun to get underway at Sean Eiffe Park, updates on Ireland victory over Australia through the clubs intercom were received with cheers from the players.
It was clear from the first few games that this was no micky mouse competition and that the teams who had travelled from far and wide were not going to give up a chance at the final without a fight. All the games were very fast, tough hitting games and it was obvious going into the later part of the day that although the players were feeling the effects of the long day they would battle on for a chance to take home the title of All Ireland Intermediate Sevens Champions.
The event was extremely well organised with 8 pitches at the Ratoath GAA club meaning that games were run very quickly and there was little to no standing around waiting. On the day facilities such as tents beside all the pitches were invaluable to the players as a few rain showers passed by. Luckily for the most part the weather was dry meaning that the games didn’t fall to far behind the schedule and by 6pm over 44 games had taken place.
At the end of the day it was Nobber from county Meath that took the title, defeating Tír na nÓg in the final. It was a tough game that went to extra time, and a late goal from Nobber made it difficult for Tír na nÓg to stay in the game as energy began to wane. It truly was a great day for all of the 29 teams that took part and club members seemed very happy with the success of the day.
