Worship is the meeting of heaven and earth. This is how life is meant to be lived. Sin separates us from God, driving a wedge between heaven and earth that only God can remedy. In 1 Chronicle 21, David is tempted to take a census of the people. He numbers the people in preparation for war. The Lord is displeased that David has begun to rely on his own strength, forsaking God’s power to save. “The king is not saved by his great army; a warrior is not delivered by his great strength. The war horse is a false hope for salvation, and by its great might it cannot rescue. Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his steadfast love” (Ps 33:16-18). In the midst of judgment, God is gracious to David and reveals the place where he will find forgiveness and the temple will be built.
