Shobhakar Dhakal (Global Carbon Project, Tsukuba, Japan) on Can we re-engineer cities to be forces for environmental good?
- Urban areas house over half the world’s population and are growing rapidly.
- Currently, urban areas consume large proportions of the world's resources and are responsible for as much as 80% of greenhouse gas emissions. Yet, they are also hotbeds of cultural and economic activities.
- Is it therefore unsurprising that cities are often considered central to addressing sustainable development.
- This poses enormous challenges for planners, engineers as well as the people and organisations that inhabit urban areas.
