An unseen killer is knocking off girls one-by-one at a private ballet school run by a domineering headmistress with a ghastly secret. Sound familiar? Released eight years before Suspiria, it’s almost inconceivable Dario Argento didn’t model his masterpiece after La Residencia, itself recalling aspects of Mario Bava’s early to mid-1960s work. Though highly stylized and in its own way even more erotic than its like, La Residencia is a much more nuanced, less sensational work, a legendarily underseen monument of gothic dread. Butchered for sex in Spain, violence in France and length in America, this never-before-seen version newly assembled by Spectacle restores it all—and in its uncropped CinemaScope format with the original English language soundtrack as spoken by the actors.
