Shot entirely on Kodak Super 16mm film, ‘Top Of The Misfits’ documents the life of Guy Spence, a one-time career criminal, reformed drug addict and community worker. This short film is a slice of life documentary; detailing Guy’s childhood and upbringing, his descent into a life of crime and addiction, and his recovery.
Growing up in Sydney’s Western Suburbs with a violent father, Guy Spence used his first syringe at age 11 and began his criminal career from the age of 13. He was first sentenced to Long Bay Prison at age 17 and since, he’s been jailed 10 times in 12 years as well as finding himself in a cycle of detox units, halfway houses, homeless shelters and rehab facilities. He’s stopped using heroin, stopped drinking alcohol and now spends his time as community worker, helping other ex-convicts like himself with drug, alcohol and gambling addiction - using his experience to get their lives back on track.
