Some people are indirectly affected by it. Some people have thought about it. Some people have attempted it. Some people have done it.
Suicide is a serious issue, linked to depression, stress, anxiety, mental illness and PTSD.
Suicide awareness brought more than 200 people in September through the doors of the Dark Arts Tattoos shop in the Benson neighborhood of Omaha. Tattoo artist Jason Contreras donated 100 percent collected from each of the $20 semicolon tattoos to the Nebraska chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Contreras is continuing to take appointments in October.
A semicolon is a symbol connected to suicide because of its meaning: The semicolon symbol is used to signify that someone's story isn't over yet. Those displaying a semicolon tattoo could be survivors of suicide who still have a story to tell. "The semicolon is to remind me that you can get over the hump," said Shannon Hart.
