from DAILY VARIETY: Thursday's revelation of RKO Pictures' move to mount the Orson Welles script "The Way to Santiago" left out an interesting subplot on how the project was found. Producer Debra Hill unearthed it, as co-chairwoman of the AFI producing program at the Center for Advanced Studies. Producing fellow Joe Smith and directing fellow Jack Swanstrom had turned in a film of the first act as a black-and-white short. Hill, who said she and John Carpenter borrowed the memorable opening scene of "Halloween" from Welles' "Touch of Evil," was shocked to learn it was a Welles original. She then enlisted RKO's Ted Hartley and Julia Halperin to mount it as a feature.
