‘SMOOTHEST MOVER’ award -- Jake Goold
Smooth Movers 2018 presented by TCSS really was quite a splendid weekend. A combination of surfing, art and music in its finest and most organic state. The weekend came at us like two swans in a bin liner and we loved every single second.
From the ‘MOVE’ exhibition to the live music, from the surfing to the party, the beer was cold, emotions were hot and it was fantastic.
Firstly, a huge thank you to everyone that supported us in this frankly wild endeavour:
Alex, Ben and Ollie from Wasted Talent/TCSS - a true trio of the finest swans. Tom Chapman from Algorhythm for his spectacular guidance. The National Trust for their ongoing efforts and the use of the beach. Laurence and Pete of Shore Surf School. Hugh Brockman from BOS Surfboards for shaping the beautiful fish for the first prize in the ‘LOG’ division. Cailean Swan from the Rockpool for hosting such a band of renegades and Matt Bandy without whom we’d all still be dreaming.
A resoundingly large thank you to all our artists, musicians, competitors and spectators, with a quick and equally as resounding mention to Callum Morse, Gavin Joule, Bea Silla and Dave Muir for capturing the weekend - quite the media team. To our artists and photographers: Michelle Costello, Joe Greenway, Nick Pumphery, Ed Royall, Oscar Van Hoorn, Matt Bandy, Callum Morse, Marine Jaud, Jack Whitefield, Sandra Stevens. To our musicians: Nick Radford, Tyler Crewes, Ola Loco, Thomas Ford, Frankie Davies and Half Kut.
Onwards, it was with great pleasure that Gwithian Academy of Surfing awarded Rory Mason and Guy Griffiths lifetime achievement awards on behalf of Smooth Movers. These awards were presented to two outstanding members of our surfing community whose help was always on hand in the run up to and during the event. Two people who probably didn't realise just how much we’d lean on those hands, rather heavily at times. Thank you guys - we appreciate you.
An ongoing thank you (in the hope they’ll read this and come back next year) to our very professional judging panel. Through the calm and the chaos, heat after heat, these guys kept the SM train rolling. Bruce Daniel, Chris Ranford, Liam Dennis-Green, Neil Peek and an extra loud thanks to our man Chris Betty who walked away with the Judging Lifetime Achievement Award presented by Karin at Gwithian Beach Break Chalets. Thanks guys - we appreciate you.
Additional and equally resounding thank you’s to Paula Peek for her support throughout and coordination keeping Godrevy Beach clean all day long, Ian Gabbitas for being the most accommodating and generally nice bloke in Gwithian and Kieran Roberts for his skills at just about everything practical.
Also in the ongoing thank you’s, here’s to Mark, Emily and Lord Joe, see you and the Landy next year?
Second to last, what Smooth Movers is yet even we don’t know but without Jack Mander we barely be an idea, thank you Jack. Smooth Movers better dressed half and everything in between. Elin Hagstein, thanks for everything, i’ll say no more.
That leaves us with saying a one last thank you to the people we undoubtedly forgot to name personally and every single one of you who dragged yourselves down to Godrevy, best beach in the world, to enjoy some of the finest traditional surfing the world has ever seen. Here’s to next year, three swans, one ethereal bin liner, SM 2k19 coming in hot. SM xx.
