Background: This November, I traveled to Salta in northwest Argentina with a volunteer group for TOMS Shoes. We were from all over the U.S. - Texas, California, Georgia, Pennsylvania, New York. Our group (Salta's 10th volunteer trip) handed out pairs of alpargatas, comfy moccasins designed in Argentina, to children who otherwise would share and wear poorly fitted shoes. Seeing the joy on their faces, even though this was only a small gesture in our eyes, was the most rewarding part of the trip. And, getting to know a dynamic group of people, with the guidance and humor of Pepe, our trip leader, was life-changing.
Notes on the equipment & project:
I brought a small mini DV camera to film the experience. I couldn't fit a tripod in my bag, so the handheld camera really shows up in the final piece. I ended up filming about 4 hours of footage in total, and had to create this 6 minute video for a Film/Video class under time constraints - if given more time, I would have liked to do a long piece with interviews so you could get to know this fantastic group!
