This work made up part of my final submission for my Masters in Post Production Sound Design:
"In this study, I intend to examine the use of diegetic synchronous sound effects and their emotional and cognitive relationship to visual images. I propose to do this by creating two sound designs for the short animated film, Barcode (2001) by Adriaan Lokman."
My second treatment of the film, Barcode 2, aims to engage the audience in a different way (than Barcode 1). By using, asynchronous, non-diegetic sound, I hope to explore the audience’s reaction to the animation on an emotional level wherever possible. While the sound design for Barcode 1 deals with the perceived physical properties and trajectory of the film to engage the audience, I would like to offer an alternative sound design that, without the limitations of the visual parameters of sync sound and “realism”, offers the audience new ways to read the film.
