My MFA thesis video, Big Dramatic is an experimental documentary that chronicles a man’s battle with a rare form of cancer, and his best friend’s interpretation of the disease. The film eschews conventional narrative and documentary methods in an attempt to build a new type of science film that embraces the ambiguities of real life. Like the complex interpretations of the characters in the video, split-screens, heavy compositing, and the absence of a voice-over narrator deny the viewer an easy reading of the disease or the relationship between the two best friends.
