TrAP, Cinemateket and Oslo Documentary Cinema held a screening of Global Family (2018) followed by a conversation between directors Melanie Andernach and Andreas Köhler and writer and medical doctor Warsan Ismail, who has written many articles commenting on the Somali community in Oslo. The conversation was led by Hanan Benammar, an Oslo-based artist and one of the curators behind this series of films.
Due to the civil war in Somalia, the Shaash family live scattered across the globe. When 88-year-old Imra needs a new home, the whole clan must come together to help their grandmother.
Like Germany, Norway has a large Somali diaspora, which is mostly invisible in media and culture, with the exception of the highly problem-oriented debate on immigration. This documentary provides us with a rare and personal insight into the Shaash family, their thoughts, joys and frustrations, and how they support each other despite how different their lives have become.
Global Family was shown October 23, 2018, as part of TrAP's film program «The Courage to live – a conversation about freedom, migration and love» at Cinemateket, Oslo.
