By now, many of you will be aware of the Open Letter to All Members of Parliament sent on behalf of Anglican schools of which The King's School was one of 34 signatories. This letter has received a breadth of media coverage, from the sensational to the more balanced. While it is unfortunate that some media channels have chosen to frame the letter as favouring sex discrimination, the clear purpose of the letter is to raise the issue of religious freedom.
We recognise that we live in a time of heightened sensitivities in which proponents of gender extremism persist in a battle over religious belief. Consequently, many current initiatives to address issues of discrimination and gender disparity have tended to focus on reducing and legislating against religious freedom.
Our concern is that, while it is important that we address matters concerning gender, we must not do so by attacking religious freedom. Instead, we need to do both – improve gender inclusivity and affirm and improve religious freedom. One should not be at the expense of the other.
Our Headmaster has agreed to this special edition Kingscast to give our Community the balanced perspective required in this issue.
