This film contains 16mm cine footage shot by Magnum Photos co-founder George Rodger while on assignment in Kordofan, Southern Sudan, in 1949.
The remarkable seventy-year-old footage documents a largely unseen East African world. It shows Rodger’s journey and how he and his Chevrolet crossed rivers and crawled through dense jungle. Ancient tribal practices were recorded, including the Latuka’s Dance of the Rainmakers and the Nuba bracelet fighters in combat.
This film gives important context to Rodger's landmark photo story of the region, first published in the second issue of National Geographic in 1951, and then expanded into Village of the Nubas, published in 1955.
Kordofan was edited by Peter Rodger.
