Our passage today-1 John 1:5-10-begins with the incredible declaration that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. The first three words, God is light, declare God's faithfulness to save! In Jesus, God's promised rescue mission has come to fruition. John 1:9 reads, "The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world." Those who walk in the light are those who have received (by faith) God's revelation in Jesus Christ (the Gospel), and have been transformed to live differently. In vv. 6-10, John lays out for the church what walking in the light looks like. We could argue from the larger context of 1 John (e.g., 1:3; 1:7; 3:16-18; 4:12) that this is intended to take place in the context of the local church. The light has come; those who receive the light are forgiven and reconciled to God; those who receive the light are further brought into God's family, the church, where they are called to live as God's light-in-the-world people. Again, this is for our joy and God's glory!
