In this series, CrossFit trainer and filmmaker Amit Tripuraneni travels around six major Asian cities, sampling the cuisine, learning about the culture and exploring the local CrossFit scene.
In Episode 3, Tripuraneni travels to the nation of Brunei, with its beautiful mosques, many markets and a healthy fitness scene that includes a growing number of CrossFit affiliates.
Mike Mogard is a five-time Regional athlete who finished 46th at the 2013 Reebok CrossFit Games. As the head coach at Reebok CrossFit 673 in Brunei's capital city of Bandar Seri Begawan, Mogard is eager to expand the CrossFit community in Brunei, an oil-rich nation completely surrounded by Malaysia on its land side.
Other affiliate owners around the world have noted barriers that might exist outside the gym are broken down as people lift and sweat, and Mogard says the same thing is happening in Brunei. The Islamic country of about 425,000 is also home to Buddhists and Christians, as well as a significant number of expatriates.
“Fitness is a unifier,” Mogard says.
He adds: “You get in there and suffer together, and it’s amazing how much common ground and unity you’ll find.”
