In this series, CrossFit trainer and filmmaker Amit Tripuraneni travels around six major Asian cities, sampling the cuisine, learning about the culture and exploring the local CrossFit scene.
In Episode 1, Tripuraneni travels to Tokyo, Japan, a vibrant metropolis with 12 million people and only six CrossFit affiliates.
Yuko Sakuyama, the Fittest Woman in Asia in 2017, says she thinks CrossFit is growing but slow to catch on because people are nervous about gaining muscle.
Andy Bruce, owner of Reebok CrossFit Roppongi, agrees that some people avoid weight training because they feel pressure to fit a standard in which skinny is considered beautiful.
“But it’s our job to educate them,” Bruce says. “Once people learn about health and feeling good and not being sick anymore, then the mentality changes.”
