Keynote Speaker, Hedy Chang, Executive Director, Attendance Works
Hedy is the founder and executive director of the non-profit initiative, Attendance Works. Attendance Works is the nation’s “go to” resource for strategies to reduce chronic absence (missing more than 10% of school for any reason). Since its founding in 2010, Attendance Works successfully moved chronic absence from a little-known term to a required reporting and optional school accountability metric in the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).
Educators understand how critical school attendance is for academic success. Federal and state policy has raised the bar for districts and schools in their duty to lower chronic absenteeism rates; and increasingly, education systems across the country are developing effective strategies for responding to this challenge.
To kick off our Every Student, Every Day initiative, we’re bringing together schools, community and statewide leaders for a one-day summit to strengthen the connection between school attendance and academic achievement through research-based practices and strategies.
