For many years our Bishop has been good friends with Cardinal Justin Rigali. They met while Bishop Stika was a young priest in the Diocese of St. Louis. For a long time they have nurtured their friendship and have talked about spending the Cardinal's retirement years together. That day has finally come.
Cardinal Rigali will continue to act in many leadership roles and have many responsibilities with the Holy See but he will be based here in the Diocese of Knoxville. The Cardinal will share the Bishop's residence and he will sometimes preside at mass right here in East Tennessee.
While spotting a Cardinal in Knoxville might have once been a rare occurrence, it will be common for our faithful to spot him with our Bishop at various functions and masses.
The Diocese of Knoxville welcomes Cardinal Rigali with open arms.
