In recent years Castel Volturno, a small town 35 km north-west of Naples, has become a refuge for thousands of irregular immigrants, mostly from West Africa, struggle to find a temporary livelihood and protection in the unofficial economy. Sandra Hetzl is interested in the everyday strategies of these protagonists, in their hopes, dreams, and their sometimes bizarre attempts to give meaning to a situation of extreme arbitrariness.
