Scenes from my adventure to St Helena Island, one of the most remote inhabited places in the world. I went there in 2011 to conduct research for my novel Finding Napoleon. After Waterloo, the defeated emperor spent five years in exile on the island and died there on May 5, 1821. When I visited, St Helena still didn't have an airport. The only way to get there was a five-day voyage from Cape Town, South Africa, on one of Britain's last mail ships, the HMS St Helena. I stayed nine days before taking the five-day journey back to Cape Town.
