“Once you start to see the world through food, everything changes. Seemingly unconnected things turn out to be closely linked: apparently confusing relationships spring into relief.”
Draft video edit - Part of a selection of videos selected for Visual Ethnographic research for my MRes. The theme is based around the relationship between food and cities. Please feel free to add comments and observations of what you see in the videos.
This video was shot in Downtown LA (Los Angeles) in 2011 around 4.30pm. The area is referred to as ‘Skid Row’, officially known as Central City East, and contains the largest stable populations of homeless people in the United States. With gentrification and new development of downtown LA, the homeless have been pushed into a more concentrated cluster using domestic tents as portable homes. After strong advice not to film, we filmed from a car. You can see people are territorial and generally desperate, fighting is common and mental illness and drug abuse endemic.
