"202X is really the organizational culture that we’re talking about in our organization. And the idea behind that is that we need to continually think about how we’re excellent today but we know that so many things are changing so rapidly in the world. Technology is just a great example of that. It’s just accelerating at an accelerating rate. Same with the demographics are changing all the time. And so, part of what we want to do is make sure that we are an organization that not only today can meet the demands but we’re constantly thinking ten years ahead of time, thus the X on the 202X, it’s being able to think ten years ahead of time, where are trends going to be at that point, and make sure that we’re doing some things today in order to make sure we can provide exceptional service at that time.
We’re asking our employees to do a lot when we think of 202X and getting ready for 2021. What we really need to be able to do is to allow all employees to express all of their gifts and talents. And the only way they can do that is in an environment in which one, they feel respected, they feel comfortable, they feel like their work matters, that there’s purpose in what they do. We celebrate together and sometimes things go well and sometimes they don’t but it’s ok, we keep moving forward. And I think that’s the kind of environment that we have to develop.
I think from my perspective as City Manager, if we create the environment and the culture, our employees will do an exceptional job. We don’t need to tell them how to do their job, they know what they need to do for their job, we just have to create the environment and culture in which they can do that. And that’s what our intent with 202X is.
I think this is actually the perfect time to be part of the team, and in many ways. One is, there’s some really interesting things happening right now when we think about the gigabit environment downtown that's been set up with the high speed fiber and what that means for the future. There’s very few communities that have that capacity. And so we’re out in front on that, as an economic driver, and a prosperity and social equity driver. I think that the development along the riverfront, the Knight Campus at the University has potential to be a transformational piece for us here.
We’re doing things right now that previous generations have dreamt about and have had a vision about and we’re actually the ones that are able to help implement that. And so that’s a pretty exciting time to be here in my mind.
And then we plop 2021 right in the middle of that. You almost couldn’t ask for a better sequence of events to do that. So we have huge purpose right now in what we’re doing. We have opportunities to make transformational changes. We have an opportunity to be extremely generous and prideful in introducing and confirming who we are to the world. It’s a great time to be here."
