'The Procession of Disappearance' (2018),
Duration 22 minutes, colour 16/9
‘The Procession of Disappearance’ was a collective performance dealing with the elements that tend to disappear from the island of Gozo, in Malta, whether it is the erosion of landscapes with the collapsing of the Azure Window (Tieqa tad-Dwejra), the Gozitan dialect disappearing, or forgotten legends. The idea of that procession was not to mourn the disappearance of those fragile things, but to celebrate their ephemeral nature. As the procession went on, a series of rituals inspired by the sea took place. Weimagined those rituals dealing with the island’s stories and the feeling of disappearance as a collective performance ending on the cliffs of Gharb.
I directed this film during a residency at Spazju Kreattiv - Malta’s National Art Centre - as part of the official programme of Valletta 2018 European Capital of Culture. The performance was created by my artist collective made of Pearlie Frisch, Maria de la O Garrido, Lena Heubusch, Candice Japiassu, Stephanie Sant and myself.
