In a film contract for the Ontario Ministry of Education, I spent a few weeks with a group of Chinese exchange students, filming their travels through Ottawa, Niagara, and Toronto. None of them spoke English very well, and all I can say in Mandarin is “I love you” and some sort of swear word they taught me. Yet somehow, we were able to connect behind the scenes and became good friends throughout the shoot. I was able to see so many classic “Ontarian” experiences that I’ve had myself (First time at Canada’s Wonderland, Niagara Falls, CN Tower, etc etc) through the eyes of kids who had never experienced anything like it before.
It’s the story of a group of kids that are very different from myself, but maybe, like me, you’re able to see a bit of yourself in them too.
