ArtPrize is a radically open, international, social art experiment focused on expanding and broadening the conversation about art.
For 19 days in 2011, 1,582 artists from 39 countries and 43 U.S. states used the city of Grand Rapids, Mich. as a canvas on which they experimented their work, showing in 164 venues all over the city, while visitors voted for their favorite works using mobile devices and the Web.
The unprecedented competition brought nearly 500,000 people to the city. The ArtPrize competition awarded $498,000 to prizewinners. Since its inception, individuals of all backgrounds have cast more than 1.2 million votes for public art.
