On New Year's Day, 2009, I was hiking from village to village in the mountains near Longsheng. I had reached a village where there were no guest houses. I had planned to retrace my steps back to a previous village. However, the new year started with a stroke of luck, as a young man who spoke English invited me to have dinner at his parents' place and to spend the night in a house that he had recently built. As the guests drifted in, a wok was set over the fire, and a kettle of rice wine was set by its side. Dinner was spiced with fiery hot peppers, and quenched by the bowlful of warm rice wine. As my vision began to blur, I reached for my camera and found that I still had enough ability to shoot this short video.
