In Matthew's account, he says that wise men came from the east looking for Jesus, because they had seen a sign in the sky.
The wise men headed for the capital, Jerusalem, expecting to find the new king in the palace. They called on the king, Herod, and asked 'Where is the new born king of the Jews? We have seen his star as it rose, and we have come to worship him.'
Herod asked the religious scholars where the Messiah would be born, and they told him it was foretold that he would be born in Bethlehem.
So the wise men went to Bethlehem, and found Mary and Jesus. But when they left, God warned them through a dream not to go back to Herod, so they went home by a different route.
Through Matthew's account of the wise men, he is making the point that these foreign astrologers were wiser in worshipping Jesus than the leaders of his own people were in rejecting him.
