1 John 2:15-17 and 1 John 2:12-14 must be read alongside one another. With these two passages, John juxtaposes life in the world with life in Christ. 1 John 2:15-17 serves as a gracious warning to God's church. What we see in our passage is that love for God and love for the world are mutually exclusive. The object of our love determines where we will spend eternity. John begins by entreating the church to not love the world, followed by four supportive reasons for his command. In sum, John calls the church to not love the world because it precludes love for God, dishonors God and separates (the one who loves the world) from God. Is it obvious from the way you live your life, day-to-day, that you love God, or do your attitude and actions indicate a love for the world? If the latter, repent today, and seek the Lord with your whole heart. Ask other believers to come alongside you to help you treasure Christ supremely.
