"The Hidden Rainbow of West China", a Wild China Film production, written by Carolina Rodrigues and Executive Producer Xi Zhinong will premiere at the 2019 WCFF in New York and the Wildlife Conservation Exhibition in Dali, Yunnan.
An unprecedented documentary about the rare Chinese Monal, an endangered mountain pheasant which is only to be found in China, featuring never before seen video footage of this species. The Chinese Monal is a colorful dazzling plumage bird which lives between 2300m to 4900m higher than most mountain pheasants. Because of its small population and extreme habitat, this bird is very difficult to see in the wild and the specie is still relatively unknown to scientists. To be able to capture first time on camera behaviors such as nesting and hatching, Wild China's crew spent more than two years filming and used different methods such as GoPro and trap cameras.
The documentary follows the Chinese Monal through the different seasons, with a special focus on the breeding period, since the courtship rituals of male to the first steps of the baby chicks out of the nest. But life here is not as easy as it may seem. Above the tree line, it's a pretty harsh environment, and there are many hungry predators who threaten the young monals. Habitat loss is another big threat to the already small population, which has seen a big decline in the past decades due to human activities such as poaching, deforestation and overgrazing. In face of so many dangers, the Chinese Monal's future is uncertain and faces the possibility of becoming extinct before the world gets to know them.”
