Exceptional disaster coverage and sustained reporting on the causes and consequences of the hurricane
The only one of four local television stations in New Orleans to stay on the air continuously, WWL-TV provided outstanding, unflappable, courageous reporting of this catastrophe. The station had a disaster plan in place, mobilizing back-up broadcast facilities at Louisiana State University and Louisiana Public Broadcasting in Baton Rouge. The news team mastered the story from early warnings to its aftermath. The reporting is measured, thorough and informative. The news team sacrificed their personal circumstances to provide spectacular reporting under the worst imaginable conditions. The staff continues to investigate the causes of flooding and the failures of disaster relief efforts, often airing discussions with public officials, business representatives, educators and members of the community.
