At times we weren’t even sure the day would ever come, but... we have left Bali behind!

Our time on the mythical island has been a magnificent period in our lives in so many respects and leaving it wasn’t easy. Nevertheless - and contrary to staunch Balinese belief - the island isn’t the centre of the world after all, and it was time to move on.

In the 5 months we spent on Bali we clocked 2700 km on the scooters. Not bad given the island is just 80 km across and that you can circumvent it in a day, should one so please.

Before we left we ferried the scooters to the neighboring island of Lombok and drove all over that too.

Compared to Bali, Lombok is practically empty. Somebody even built an amazing coast road up the west coast and then forgot about it, leaving it pretty near abandoned for us to cruise up and down on our way to and from the Gili Islands. Nice.

Lombok’s south coast seems only to be visited by surfers and is genuinely magical with pristine empty tropical beaches - white sands, azure seas and a backdrop of coconut trees. Stuff that makes stock photos. It’s just silly.

Getting to the surf breaks there is a real adventure on roads that hasn’t been fixed in anyone’s lifetime, through tobacco fields, past herds of water buffalo, bona fide gold diggers(!) and of course more empty beaches.
