Metropolis Ensemble is a Grammy-nominated nonprofit professional chamber orchestra based in New York City. We recognize that cultural organizations have the potential to make a special contribution to the quality of life and education of inner-city young people.

Our education outreach program, Youth Works, teaches music composition to school-aged children. Our goal is to expand our program to another site, The TEAK Fellowship, which helps talented students from low-income families gain admission to and succeed at top high schools and colleges. Currently, there is no music curriculum being offered at TEAK and Metropolis Ensemble, with the help of The Hartford, seeks to fill that gap and give these kids an opportunity to achieve something truly extraordinary – to compose music and have it be brought to life by a professional orchestra.

The Youth Works program teaches kids how to compose music and express themselves through musical creativity. Classes are structured to accomplish 2 goals: 1) to guide students through the basic principles of composition so that they may express themselves through music; and 2) to present a concert at the end of the school year that showcases the students' work, performed by Metropolis Ensemble.

The Hartford Achieve Contest will allow us to offer this innovative program to TEAK students tuition-free and to provide a modest stipend for our teachers and musicians, purchase supplies, and defray production costs.
