Summary: The COIL Institute courses involve connecting courses and classrooms in different parts of the world with carefully developed shared activities online. Each classroom, its students and instructor, are embedded in a rich, multi-layered cultural context that differs in many dimensions from its partner classroom. We will talk about those layers and, working in teams, attempt to map the relationship between these classrooms. This will be a starting point for thinking about how to build classroom connections across various types of distance, to understand the borders of our disciplines, institutions, and broader cultures, to identify potential barriers that we need to travel around or overcome.
