Howth Coast Guard has now rolled out a new support callout system for members. The system works off an application (app) available for Android and Apple Smartphones called HeyTell.
The primary source of paging for the team is a Motorola Paging system controlled by the Marine Rescue Co-ordination Centre. This same system is in place with all 50 stations around the country.
The evolution of the smart phone has allowed the team to create a back up callout system that is very quick to use both for the sender and the receiver. Once the Officer in charge needs to activate the team to an emergency call a message is sent out at once to all members with a smartphone, this takes a matter of seconds which is much faster than previous methods of sending out text messages.
As members are mobilising to the station and to the scene updates can be given on location and conditions. The application is free and usage works via internet making this a very affordable support solution to ensuring an effective and efficient response.
