Part of the ” … the oldest new structure in the history of this city” series. The recreated Arch of Palmyra is a placeless reconstruction. It was 3D-modeled and subsequently robotically carved at 1/3 scale of the original arch by the London-based Institute for Digital Archaeology less than a year after the original was dynamited by ISIS. The replica, conveniently carved in stackable sections and stored in several shipping containers, has traveled the Western world, from London to New York, Florence and elsewhere. It largely exists as a thing to be revealed and then broken back down. In this VR (virtual reality) version, the magic trick is distilled as a simple disappearing act in an endlessly gray environment.
