If we scrub the memory of our past, we don’t learn from our past. The church in Antioch recognized that the Pharisees were nostalgic for the past by attempting to force the old wine of Jewish customs, particularly circumcision, into the new wineskins of new Gentile believers, but they also knew the mission to the Jews would fail if certain acts were permitted.
