Photographed in 2 days, this was the first film shot with the prototype version of Vision Research's Phantom Flex camera. Originally, we planned to do a simple camera test of dynamic range, resolution, chromatic aberration etc., but we got a little carried away with the idea of making a narrative short and decided to push as hard as we could to make something more out of the time we had.
Told through the eyes of Jack, a soldier in WWII and his lover Liz, at home; SOMEWHERE ELSE is a short meditative work on love, displacement, loss and life.
After an assault by German soldiers, the near death of both Jack and his comrade send his spirit spiraling over the edge. Only the memories of what he and Liz shared keep him alive in his darkest moments.
I was nominated by the International Cinematographer's Guild for the 2011 Emerging Cinematographer Awards for this work.
