When it comes to popular or pop music in Sri Lanka, there is precious little worth listening to. However, a groundbreaking tune swifts through occasionally, and the song featured here is one of those rare gems. Written, composed and performed by the highly gifted, young artist Chamara Weerasinghe, it is a unique take on the love life of the jungle-dwelling, aboriginal people in the island called ‘Veddha’ who presently speak a dialect, which is a mixture between their original language and Sinhala. The song is written in this dialect, which is hard for even the Sinhalese to understand, not to talk about translating it into English!
The song perfectly represents the raw energy and the sexuality of primeval, ritual courting in a modern interpretation. We tried to depict this by using the video footage of two US hits and a video about the phases of the moon, in a fast moving frame animation. We have requested permission to use these videos from the respective copyright holders and have not heard from them yet. We sincerely hope they would, kindly allowing us to keep this video here.
This video is part of our, forthcoming musical, Framedance™.
