In 1960s Southern California, a car meant more than just mobility — it also meant freedom, fun and family. In this short film by PLANE—SITE, architect David Martin tells the story of his lifelong passion for race cars. Starting with a 1931 Ford roadster at just 13 years old, before he could even drive, Martin spent his youth renovating and racing classic hot rods. Over time, his interest in automobiles converged with his other passions: architecture, design and fabrication. Today, he takes a holistic design approach to improve classic hot rods and compete around the world in events like America’s Most Beautiful Roadster, the Silver State Classic Challenge, Hot Rod of the Year and Bernina Gran Turismo.
