The trailer for the feature film Go is a dramatic reconstruction of the so-called atomic bomb go game which took place during the bombing of Hiroshima, Japan on 6th August, 1945. It traces the events during the historical 3-day-long game between the master player Hashimoto Utaro and his challenger Iwamoto Kaoru, which took place 5km away from the explosion of ‘Little Boy’. The deadly blast of the bomb disrupted the game, flinging players and observers to the side and causing serious damage to the building. Nonetheless, the game was played to a conclusion the same evening. The actors reenact the exact moves of the game in a celebration of Japanese culture and history.
Our work was inspired by Tian Zhuangzhuang’s acclaimed film The Go Master (2006) and by go instructor Peter Wendes, a passionate supporter of the go community in London. Part of a fundraising project with London’s Japan Foundation, the trailer travelled to the European Go Cultural Centre in Amsterdam.
