LA SIERRA: Dental Clinic in Villa de Vallecas
by gon (Gonzalo Pardo) + Ana Torres
Villa de Vallecas, the neighborhood where the new dental clinic is located, is more than one of the historic neighborhoods of Madrid's periphery. The clothes hanging on the facades of a large part of its streets, the frantic activity of small businesses, its high population density and interraciality, the unique and unconditional support of its own football team, or the pleasure of writing its name with K, make this place a micro-world with its own identity.
Despite its interior condition, the new dental space, located on the ground floor of the old telegraph building and next to the emblematic Villa de Vallecas square, has the vocation not only to make city, but to be part of the everyday life of the neighborhood. In this way, the main strategy of occupation of the premises is the construction of an interior street that pretends to be an extension of the square; a space that is both a waiting room and public space.
Linked to this street is established, in the form of a saw, the most public program of the clinic: the toilet, the reception, the care office and the sterilization room. Next, and separated by the only load-bearing wall of the premises, the three intervention cabinets and the x-ray room follow one another. After this area, at the end of the premises, there is a small private space for the rest of the health personnel.
Facing the hygienic white of the floor, walls and ceiling of the clinic, color is the common denominator of all rooms; it is the constructive element that articulates and gives coherence to the project. In the saw, a gradient that goes from dark blue to yellow guides the patient to the cabinets. Once there, lying down, the roofs recreate natural scenarios that lead patients to other more relaxed worlds while they are intervened. The route back to the street is, however, white. At night, the saw is lit, as if it were a flashlight, leaving a trail of color that illuminates the streets of Vallecas, making the clinic a place of reference.
