This video offers a half-hour of highlights from "Qanuqtuurniq – Finding the Balance," a live, three-part phone-in TV series prepared by Inuit Tuttarvingat of the National Aboriginal Health Organization for International Polar Year. Originally broadcast from Iqaluit, Nunavut in May 2009, it was aired in Canada and Alaska along with web streaming. See InuitWellness.ca for background and resources.
First you will see excerpts from the men’s show, “Angutiilli qanuiliqpat? – How are we as men?” After some introductions, you’ll hear about issues Inuit men are facing and then you’ll see a short excerpt from the Qanuippitali? Inuit Health Survey. We close this part with an excerpt from the Alaska Family Wellness Warriors vignette.
Next, you’ll see clips from our show on Inuit maternity care “Nutaraqtaarniq Nunalingnirmiunut Alianaippuq! – Birth, a joyous community event!” You’ll hear from two Inuit elders about Inuit maternity knowledge and you’ll see footage from the Nunavut vignette on their midwifery training and the benefits of community birthing. A short clip from the Nunavik midwives’ graduation at the University of Laval closes this portion.
And finally, from the youth show, “Makkuktuuvunga, upimmavunga – I am young, and I am proud,” you’ll hear about Inuit youth issues, and solutions they use to cope with life’s challenges. You will see a Skype conversation with Clyde River youth about information they would like to have and then an inspiring vignette from Alaska. The highlights close with a story about youth in Kugluktuk.
